For a brighter future
NOPHO, The Nordic Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, was founded in the beginning of the 1980s by a group of enthusiastic friends with the goal to increase survival for children with cancer. Since then, NOPHO has grown into an important partner for the organisation of clinical care for children with cancer as well as a hub for all aspects of childhood cancer research in the Nordic and Baltic region and with ever increasing international collaborations. NOPHO is today the base for advanced and modern childhood cancer care and treatment for all active doctors, both clinically and research-wise. Joint training programs exist for the members, and collaborative groups meet frequently to discuss specific diagnoses and protocols.
1984
In the early 1980s, two organizations shared responsibilities for the same patient group, highlighting the need for their integration. In 1982, a meeting in Røros brought together the Nordic Hematology Society and the Nordic Society for Pediatric Oncology. The discussion led to the decision to merge, resulting in the formal establishment of the Nordic Society for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (NOPHO) in Reykjavik in 1984.
1994
NOPHO is proud to celebrate a decade of excellence in collaborative research and clinical practice across the five Nordic regions: Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Iceland. Over the past ten years, NOPHO has established approximately a dozen specialized working groups, contributing to a robust body of knowledge. To date, NOPHO has published a total of 18 publications, further solidifying its commitment to advancing healthcare and fostering collaboration in the region.
2024
This year, NOPHO proudly commemorates its 40th anniversary. Over the past four decades, the organization has experienced significant growth and development. Today, NOPHO has over 700 members, along with several active working groups dedicated to advancing the field. Over 240 publications have been published in NOPHO’s name and several member countries have joined. NOPHO now includes not only the Nordic nations but also the Baltic states of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania
Membership
Membership in the NOPHO is limited to physicians and researchers in the Nordic and Baltic countries involved in pediatric haematology and oncology. Members can access a range of resources on the website, including treatment protocols, emergency guidelines and an insight into the work of the various working groups. In addition to that, you also have the opportunity to attend NOPHO’s courses, receive material from lectures and an informative calendar.
Our Vison
Our vision is to develop research in childhood cancer together on an international level. Through close cooperation with all countries, we can create better treatment protocols. Nordic pediatric oncology stands strong internationally with good treatment results. NOPHO’s studies are recognized as reliable and well-conducted and are therefore often referenced. The Baltic countries have made great progress in the last 15 years and are now approaches the standards of the other Nordic countries. We are committed to collaborating in the fight against childhood cancer, and we envision a united approach toward achieving this goal.
